Shawn (On The Level): Lets first get some background information
for those who are just getting to know you...Who is Eternal Decision? (In your
own words.. What is your vision for the ministry and music of your group)
Cory: Eternal Decision is simply a group of guys that wanted
to play music
for the Lord Jesus Christ! The band name is our goal and vision for the
ministry. We want people to make the (E.D.) and accept Jesus Christ as their Savior.
Tommy:E.D. first got together as a band in 1992. It was Kirk Campbell, Joe
Chambless, Dusty Derickson, and I for about a year. Then Dusty left and Cory,
(who was a friend of Kirks), came in and we have been the same line up ever since.
Shawn (OTL): How and when did your band come together?
Cory:Tommy and Joe went to high school together. Kirk joined the band later and
then I came into the picture as a replacement guitar player for the "great"
Dusty Derickson.
Tommy:Joe and I met at our church's youth group in high school. We dinked
around for about 3 years playing with different drummers and guitarist that just
didn't have the vision we did for a band. But, we needed to learn how to play
our instruments anyway.
:o)
We teamed up with Kirk and Dusty while going to college in Weatherford,
Oklahoma.
Shawn (OTL): To be quite frank, I first noticed your music on a MP3 downloading
site. Have younoticed a serge of exposure and feedback due to the web? If so what
has been your experience?
By the way your web site and album graphics look great! Who did them?
Cory:Thanks, yes we have noticed a surge and a consistent amount of traffic
from the website. MP3.com has opened a lot doors for our band in terms of exposure
and
scalability.
Tommy: MP3.com and other web sources have been vital for us. We have made so
many contacts
through these avenues. A lot of people have had a chance to hear us, who may
not have even
heard of us if it wasn't for the web. As far as the graphics for the album
cover, we have a
friend of ours here in the Oklahoma City area do all of the Godfather
Records album covers.
His name is Aaron Hines. He is very good at what he does. The concepts come
from us as a
band. The web site is always morphing. I do everything on it. I basically
learned to do web
sites by working on the E.D. site. I have taken several graphics courses in
college as well.
Shawn (OTL): There was a definite music transition from the first to the
second CD.
Why the change, or do you view it as a natural transition of your music?
Cory: Hmm, The first CD was our "ice breaker" in terms of understanding
ourselves musically.
We realized the vast amount of influences we all had once we heard the CD on
the radio.
Man, I remember that day clearly! We all were in a car at 91 FM Radio
Station in OKC.
The DJ (Vern Marks), was cueing up the music and we all waited in
anticipation
to hear the song "Over Flow". Thinking back, that was a real eye-opener
because it gave us a sense of ambition that came from hearing the song on
the radio. After that point, we pressed full-steam ahead and couldn't wait
to get started on the next album.
Tommy:We don't plan on what the songs are going to sound like, or what
direction we are
going to go in. When we get together to write, we just start jamming on
riffs and have a
little jam box handy to record any cool ideas on the spot. Then we just add
to those riffs
other ideas for a verse or chorus and eventually a song is born. The
transition you hear,is
just simply each person being open to other ideas as we write. So, in this
case, it is a
very natural progression. We don't try to be the hardest or fastest sounding
band.
We just write what comes natural and what we like.
Shawn (OTL): Some would say there is a big hint of metallica's earlier work.
Where you
influenced
by the band, and was it your hope to reach out to the Metalica fans?
Cory:After we cut the album, we realized the sound was similar. However, we
didn't make it our mission to sound like Metallica. It just kind of came
out that way! We are happy the music ministers to the Metallica fans.
Heck, we are happy the music ministers to anyone! Whether secular,Christian
or Mongolian!
Every band has a message to convey. Christian bands are not the only bands
that have a
message to people. Secular bands do as well. They have a message they want
to get
across. What do you think that message is? Eternal Decision has a message
too! Read the
lyrics, what do you think the message that we are trying to get across to
people is?
Shawn (OTL): Are you in the writing stage for a new album? If so when can
we expect it
to come out?
Cory:Yes, we are praying that we get the E.D.3 album out by the summer of
2001.
Hmm, E.D.3 - I like the sound of that!
Tommy:We are working very hard to get these songs ready to record. People
will get their
moneys worth in terms of quantity, I can tell you that! We are excited about
the new songs.
We have a goal for the whole recording process and that goal involves having
another album
by summer.
Shawn (OTL): What does an eternal decision show look like? When you get
up on stage do
you have
some goals or an idea of what you hope for outof the show?
Cory: Yes, our goal is to lift up the name of Jesus Christ. If we accomplish
this,
"he draws all men to Him".
Shawn (OTL): What is your hope for the future of Eternal Decision? Do you
feel like
this group is
a short term project or something you would like to do for years to come?
Cory: The ministry E.D. is so much more than a short term project. It is a
"calling"
from God on our lives. We have agreed as a unit the band is a God thing and
not a
Joe, Kirk, Tommy or Cory thing.
Thanks Shawn for your consideration. We appreciate your interest in
our band.
